Yard Waste Disposal

As a part of Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) permit conditions for the expansion of the Sandtown Landfill and Jones Crossroads Landfill, a ban on the disposal of yard waste was put into effect as of January 1, 2011 for all of Kent and Sussex Counties.  This means that yard waste, such as grass, leaves, tree limbs up to four inches (4”) in diameter, shrubs and garden material, must be separated from common household waste and cannot be included in weekly trash pickup.  Residents of the City of Harrington may bring these items to Public Works at 102 Franklin Street for disposal every Wednesday,  from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm*  Should you have any questions, please feel free to call City Hall at 398-3530.

*Proof of residency is required at time of disposal.

When cutting your grass this spring, please do not blow your grass in curb lines. This can cause storm drains to backup, leading to big problems for you and your neighbors! Also, inspect all trees/bushes and make sure they are not covering any street signs, they are not in the walkway path of sidewalks or overhanging in the streets.

BULK RATES

As of July 1, 2007 new fees were adopted by Council. Bulk rates were increased. The fee for pick-up is now $160.00 and the drop off fee is $80.00 for a regular size truck load. This fee must be pre-paid at the City Hall office at 106 Dorman Street. Public Works will then be notified of the bulk pick-up or drop-off. An employee must be present at the public works building on Franklin Street in order to allow the drop-off.

2011 Fire Hydrant Flushing Schedule

City hydrants will be flushed monthly on the third Monday and Tuesday of the month between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when the weather is suitable and is above freezing. The dead end lines will be flushed bi-weekly on Mondays.

During this process, residents may experience low water pressure at times, but it will be restored as soon as the flushing is completed. Hydrants will be flushed a minimum of ten minutes or until water runs clear. When the hydrant has run over ten minutes to accomplish clear water, the hydrant will be ran an additional five minutes as long as it is clear.
